One of the most well-known names in all of gambling, Tropicana has a long, storied history in Las Vegas, and continues to shine on the Strip today. Although it has seen several changes of ownership and several newer resorts built all around it, Tropicana still provides a great level of entertainment to visitors from all over the world.
A brief history of Tropicana Las Vegas
Tropicana Las Vegas is one of the few holdovers from the original age of the Las Vegas Strip. Originally opened in 1957, Tropicana’s theme was to give guests a chance to stay in one of four distinctly different styles of rooms, including Cuban and Italian Renaissance. The property has always struggled against competition like Caesars Palace, and has, as a result, changed hands over the years many times.
The mob has had their hands all over Tropicana Las Vegas as well, using it as part of a skimming operation in the 1970s. The hotel and casino have been renovated and expanded several times since its original build, and recently was sold to Gaming and Leisure Properties by Penn National Gaming. The hotel continues to have a partnership with Hilton and is co-promoted as a Doubletree property on their website.
The Tropicana has been used as the backdrop for many movies and TV shows and is also the site of many live music recordings in the 1960s and 1970s. Overall, while the amenities are mainly new, there is still a nostalgic feel to the place for anyone who walks through the doors.
Gaming at Tropicana Las Vegas
The Tropicana casino floor has a little something for everyone, and given the clientele who frequent the property, the stakes are lower than at some of the competing properties on the Strip. However, the gaming space is not nearly as big as some of the other casinos, and this can mean it can be difficult to find a seat at your favorite table game or slot machine. With only 45 tables available and less than 1,000 slots, the casino floor at Tropicana Las Vegas is much more of a boutique. That shouldn’t stop you from settling in and playing your favorite game for a bit when you have a chance – we think the Trop is a great place to start or end your evening.
