Expansion Draft Rules for the Seattle Kraken
As with any expansion draft, the Seattle Kraken can’t just choose any available player that they want and call it a night. Instead, they have to adhere to a set of rules laid out by the league. By the end of the night, the team must have at least 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders selected. What they do with the remaining four picks is up to them, but the Kraken need to reach the aforementioned numbers first. The NHL’s 32nd team also can’t select more than one player from each team. When all is said and done, Seattle will have selected 30 players from 30 teams.
You may notice that the Vegas Golden Knights are excluded from tonight’s expansion draft. That’s because they busted entered the league in 2017 and chose not to receive their share of the Kraken’s expansion fee. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see if Seattle can follow in Vegas’ footsteps considering how the Golden Knights made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in their inaugural season.
