Let’s take a look around Major League Baseball at the latest:
Acuna HBP Upsets Braves Team
Rookie slugger, Ronald Acuna Jr. came into Wednesday night’s game with the Marlins riding a five game home run streak. The 20 year old had also hit a home run to lead off the previous three games for the Atlanta Braves. On Wednesday night Acuna was hit in the left elbow by the first pitch of the game thrown by Marlins starter Jose Urena. The incident sparked two bench clearing scuffles and Urena was ejected along with Braves manager Brian Snitker. Acuna had to be removed from the game in the top of the second inning, but initial X-Rays were negative. Braves All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman called the pitch, “gutless” after the 5-2 Atlanta victory. With the win the Braves completed a four-game sweep of the last-place Miami Marlins.
Cards’ Carpenter Also Hit By Pitch
The St. Louis Cardinals got a scare on Wednesday night when Matt Carpenter was hit by a pitch in the 7th inning. Carpenter was drilled in the right wrist by a pitch thrown by Nationals reliever Matt Grace. The slugger had to be removed from the game and underwent X-Rays which were negative. Carpenter has been the hottest hitter in baseball in the recent months and has propelled the Cardinals back into the National League playoff race. He leads the National League with 33 home runs and extended his on-base streak to 33 games in Wednesday’s victory. The St. Louis Cardinals have won seven straight games, and will host the Nationals on Thursday to complete their four game series.
Judge Remains Out For Yankees
The New York Yankees announced that there is no updated timetable for the return of slugger Aaron Judge. The Yankees originally announced Judge would be out a minimum of three weeks after suffering the right wrist injury. Judge suffered a chip fracture in his right wrist after being hit by a pitch. The All-Star has yet to swing a bat as he tries to make his way back to the Major League ballclub. Judge has resumed other baseball activities, but the Yankees do not know when he will be able to swing again. Judge has hit 26 homers and driven in 61 runs for the Yankees before the injury. The Yankees have a playoff spot secure in the American League as the top Wild Card.
Aaron Cox, Trout’s Brother in Law, Dies at 24
Former Los Angeles Angels minor league pitcher, Aaron Cox, has died at the young age of 24. Cox is the brother in law of Angels star, Mike Trout. The cause of death was not announced. The 24-year-old Cox had pitched in the Angels Minor League system the previous three seasons. He made 11 appearances at Inland Empire this season, which is the High A team of the Los Angeles Angels. Cox retired from baseball on August 6. He made 68 appearances during his three minor league seasons, finishing with 7-3 record with a 3.64 earned run average. Last season Cox was suspended 50 games for testing positive for Ritalin, which is a banned stimulant by Major League Baseball. Mike Trout is currently on the 10-day disabled list with the Angels and is currently away from the team during this difficult family matter.
Ramos Great in Phillies Debut
Veteran catcher Wilson Ramos made his long-awaited Phillies debut on Wednesday night and led the Phillies to a huge win over the Boston Red Sox. The former Tampa Bay Rays star collected a career-high three extra base hits in the 7-4 Philadelphia victory. Ramos also scored three times and drove in three runs for a Phillies that offense that had been sputtering of late. The Phillies acquired Ramos from the Rays before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The long awaited debut was a result of a hamstring strain that Ramos was trying to nurse before stepping onto the field. His big night prevented the Phillies from losing their sixth game in their last eight tries. Philadelphia is in a tight battle with the Atlanta Braves for the National League East crown. A healthy and productive Ramos would be huge in the final six weeks of the season for the Phillies playoff chances.
