Americas Cardroom´s high-rolling Bigger Online Super Series (BOSS) got off to a great start yesterday with a magnificent turnout for all three events.
If you were to schedule a million dollar guaranteed tournament and a high rollers tournament series at the same time as PokerStars´ World Championship of Online Poker was getting underway, some people might consider you to be a little mad. However, that is exactly what Americas Cardroom did this week.
Although the logic behind the scheduling was (we assume) to provide an option for US players unable to access PokerStars, there was always the risk that players with the bankrolls to play in high roller events would slip over the border to Canada or Mexico, or use a VPN to hide their location from PokerStars.
However, risk-taking seems to pay off at Americas Cardroom. Not only did last weekend´s Million Dollar Sunday event smash its guarantee, but the first three events in the Bigger Online Super Series have received fantastic support – including support from regular non-US PokerStars players.
Million Dollar Sunday Won by Nathan Baum
Sunday´s feature event was only the second time (out of nine) that a Million Dollar Sunday has exceeded its $1,000,000 guarantee. When late registration closed, 2,116 players had ponied up the $540 buy in or qualified through Americas Cardroom´s extensive satellite program – creating a prize pool of $1,058,000.
At the business end of the tournament, Nathan “SeaBassCl” Baum took down the $211,600 first prize – an interesting winner as Baum is a resident of New Jersey where he plays on PokerStars.NJ and WSOP.NJ. Baum flew of the regulated state to Santiago in Chile to play in the event.
Second and third places in the Million Dollar Sunday went to two non-US players. Germany´s Dennis “davinci25” Jestel collected $115,851 for his runner-up finish, and ACR regular “Texxassss” from Edinburgh in the UK won $77,022 for his third place finish.
BOSS Gets Off to a Great Start
Following a break of two days, the Bigger Online Super Series got underway with three valuable events. The first of the three – a $320 buy-in NL Hold´em tournament – practically doubled its $60,000 guarantee when 392 players chipped in to create a prize pool of $117,600.
Event #2 was the $5,000 buy-in Cage – a five hour cash game with blinds increasing every hour. Forty-three players entered the event, meaning that there was $215,000 in cash on the tables. Twenty-four players survived the heavy duty action – “theoaobab” coming out on top with $18,491.
The third event saw 286 players pay the $530.00 buy-in to smash the $100,000 guarantee. An interesting participant in this tournament was Russian player “BetinOleg” who, under the screen name of “NikolasDLP”, is a previous WCOOP bracelet winner and has more than $1.5 million in lifetime winnings on PokerStars.
Looking Forward to the Rest of the BOSS Series
With players flying out of regulated states to compete in the tournaments, and a former WCOOP bracelet winner turning his back on PokerStars to play at Americas Cardroom (although he could have been playing both at the same time), the prospects for the remainder of the BOSS series look good.
Tonight´s feature event is a $100,000 guaranteed NLHE tournament with a $1,050 buy-in, while tomorrow there is a Super Knockout event scheduled also with a $1,050 buy-in. Over the weekend, there is more than $1 million in guaranteed prize pools up for grabs – the feature event being the $500,000 guaranteed BOSS Main Event.
