Australian Open Women’s Odds: Barty Favored Over Osaka, Swiatek

Tennis fans around the world were thrilled this week when the 2022 Australian Open finally kicked off. After all, it’s one of the sports’ biggest annual tournaments and is never falls short of entertaining the masses.

While USGS has already looked at the men’s side of the bracket, it’s important to now look at how the women’s odds are shaping up during the opening week. While there are many credible contenders out there, BetOnline is favoring Ashleigh Barty to win this year’s Australian Open at +250 odds.

Barty is far from a newcomer at the tournament, having entered the Aussie Open eight times prior to this year. While she’s yet to win the whole thing, she’s made it to the quarterfinals in each of her last three outings, which includes an appearance in the semifinals back in 2020.

Despite her past at the tournament, Barty is the world’s No. 1 player for a reason and she proved that throughout the 2021 season. The 25-year-old won four different titles last year, however, none were bigger than her victory at Wimbledon. Even if that win some time ago, she’s still riding the momentum from that moment.

Considering how much poise Barty has this early in her career, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this year’s Australian Open includes a career-defining moment for her. Keeping that in mind, only time will tell if she can go all the way in Melbourne.

Naomi Osaka Australian Open Odds

Another rising star under the age of 25 is none other than Naomi Osaka. The 24-year-old has already accomplished a lot in her own career and now has the second-best odds (+550) to win the 2022 Australian Open.

Osaka has quickly been making the Aussie Open her signature event. Few people can say they’ve done what she has, which is win the tournament twice in the last three years. Osaka’s first Australian Open victory came in 2018 when she defeated Petra Kvitová in three sets to take home her first title in Melbourne.

Osaka was then eliminated in Round 3 of the 2020 iteration of the tournament before returning to the finals last year. She managed to rebound in 2021, taking on Jennifer Brady in the finals. This time, Osaka looked as dominant as ever, defeating her foe in just two sets.

Considering her overall history at the event, some may be surprised that Osaka doesn’t have better odds to go back-to-back this year. Nevertheless, that also means that bettors can get some great value if they choose her to win, as her odds are likely to get better as the Aussie Open continues.

Iga Swiatek Aussie Open Odds

At +800, Iga Swiatek has the third-best odds to win the 2022 Australian Open, according to BetOnline.

Swiatek has only entered the Australian Open three times before this year due to her being so new to the professional tennis scene. Despite her lack of experience, she’s made it to the fourth round in each of her last two showings, which gives her something to build on this year. She proved that by dominating Harriet Dart in two sets to kick off the festivities on Monday.

Swiatek only won two titles in 2021, so a promising showing at the Australian Open would do a lot to start the current season off right. There’s a lot of weight on the 20-year-old’s shoulders this time around, but she’s proven in the past that she can rise to the occasion. While she might fly under the radar, Swiatek could be a very interesting dark horse pick to win it all.
