The golfing world went through a lot of excitement over the past weekend as Collin Morikawa won the 2021 Open Championship for the first time. However, it’s a new week which means there’s another tournament on the horizon. Thursday, July 22 marks the beginning of the third-ever 3M Open, which will be played at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota.
BetOnline has released odds for the event and is heavily favoring Dustin Johnson to win it all at +750 odds. He competed at last year’s 3M Open, however, he withdrew following the first round after he suffered a back injury. Now that he’s healthy, he’s going to want to show how he can really play at TPC Twin Cities.
Johnson started off the 2021 PGA Tour on the right foot, winning the 2020 Masters Tournament back in November. However, he began to struggle, failing to make the top-10 in any event from the end of February to June. Fortunately, Johnson has been turning things around as of late. He’s finished top-25 in each of his last four outings, including when he placed T-8th at last week’s British Open. Regardless of what’s changed in his play, there’s no doubt that this is another Johnson than the one we saw a few months back. With a lot of the sport’s best golfers being absent from the 3M Open, this could be his best shot at scoring a tournament victory in a while.

Oosthuizen, Finau Have Second-Best Odds
While nobody is coming close to touching Johnson’s +750 odds, Louis Oosthuizen and Tony Finau sit second with +1400. For Oosthuizen, this will be his first time competing at the 3M Open. Nevertheless, he’s riding a momentum wave of his own recently. While he hasn’t won a tournament yet this year, he has four top-3 finishes in his last six events, which shows just how close he’s been to victory in recent weeks. That also includes coming in T-3rd at the British Open last weekend, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to see him continuing that success into Minnesota this week.
Meanwhile, Finau has competed at the previous two 3M Open tournaments. He placed 23rd in 2019, however, he finished T-3rd — three strokes back of first place. Considering how close he came last year, it’s not unfathomable to imagine him having another impressive showing this week. Although Finau finished T-15th at the Open Championship, he failed to make the cut in his two outings prior to that, so it’ll be interesting to see which version of him we get at TPC Twin Cities.
Will Either of the Past Victors Win Again?
When it comes to former 3M Open winners, both Matthew Wolff (2019) and Michael Thompson (2020) will be competing again this week. In this scenario, Wolff’s +2800 odds are pretty favorable as they put him in a tie for 5th-best odds in the field. The only thing holding him back is his recent play. Wolff has been disqualified or failed to make the cut in three of his last five outings and finished T-58th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic just over two weeks ago.
On the other hand, Thompson’s +8000 odds are far less favorable. While he may be one of two 3M Open winners, he did finish 85th at the inaugural event, meaning it’s tough to say whether last year’s victory was a fluke or not. He also hasn’t been playing that well as of late. Thompson has failed to make the cut in five of his last seven events and the ones where he did qualify saw him finish T-41st or worst. In other words, he’ll likely need another miracle run to win the 3M Open for a second time.
