Boxing icon Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather was set to have an exhibition match against YouTuber Logan Paul on Feb. 20, but that has not been postponed indefinitely.
On Tuesday, Fanmio founder and CEO Solomon Engel announced that the fight would be getting pushed back to a later date.
"After an absolutely tremendous response to the fight announcement, we're hoping to announce a new date very soon along with some new exciting details," Engel said in Tuesday’s announcement.
Fanmio is a service where people can interact with their favorite celebrities with meet-and-greet opportunities. However, Fanmio was set to host the event on their website aside from usual pay-per-view methods.
Engel did not add when or where the fight would be happening after its postponement but ensured that it would definitely be happening one day.
Mayweather was the heavy favorite to win the fight. According to Bovada, before the postponement, Mayweather’s odds to win sat at -1400, while Paul’s were +750.
Paul “OK” with the Postponement
Paul, 25, took to his YouTube podcast channel, IMPAULSIVE, to announce that the fight had been delayed due to “business complications” that had to be fixed before anything could happen.
Paul also added that he’s okay with the postponement because it allows them time to find a venue that they can pack with fans, whatever that would look like during the pandemic.
He also said that it gives him more time to train against the 43-year-old Mayweather.
Out of the two participants in the postponed exhibition match, Paul has a lot less experience in the ring.
He’s only had two boxing matches and both were against fellow YouTuber, KSI. Their first bout in 2018 was an amateur one and ended in a tie.
The second match between the two YouTubers was a professional bout in 2019, which KSI ended up winning via split decision.
No Reaction from Mayweather
Mayweather has not yet released a statement regarding his reaction towards the postponement.
His last professional boxing match came in 2017 against UFC star Conor McGregor, which Mayweather went on to win in the 10th round via TKO.
The victory improved his all-time record to 50-0, which includes 27 knockouts. He then promptly retired after the fight.
However, in 2018, Mayweather had a three-round exhibition match against Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in Saitama, Japan. Mayweather would go on to win that match via first-round TKO and has not had any other fights since then.
Logan Paul’s brother, Jake, doesn’t like the idea of his brother fighting the 50-0 boxing legend.
In 2020, Jake, who has a 3-0 boxing record, said his brother’s exhibition match with Mayweather is “bad for the sport” and that he thinks “it's just for clout.”
He went on to add that maybe getting into the ring with someone as experienced as Mayweather is a bad decision by his brother.
“Don't get in there with a guy who's never even been knocked out,” said Jake. “He's been knocked down once and it was by accident."
