One player at BetOnline Poker will be enjoying a very happy New Year, having just won BetOnline Poker´s Bad Beat Jackpot for the second time in six weeks.
In early November, BetOnline Poker´s Bad Beat Jackpot was won for the first time in nearly eight months when a player with the screen name “santinhoz” saw his flopped Quad Tens crushed by an opponent´s rivered Quad Aces. Despite losing the $221 pot, Santinhoz´s bad beat activated the $1.2 million progressive jackpot, and his share of the prize came in at a very nice $218,033.
Then, early on Christmas Eve, the Bad Beat Jackpot was won again. It´s not unusual for the jackpot to be won twice in quick succession – indeed, it happened twice in five days earlier this year. However, what was unusual about the event was that the player who suffered the bad beat was the same player as before – “santinhoz”.
How the Bad Beat Jackpot was Won (Again)
The jackpot winning hand happened in a 6-Max cash game with stakes of $10/$20. “santinhoz” ([card Jd Jh]) – who was sitting Under the Gun – opened the pre-flop action by betting $50. He was raised to $175 by the player on the Button – “Orianne17” ([card 9c 10c]) – and “santinhoz” made the call.
Following the Flop of [card Js Qc 3d], “santinhoz” checked. “Orianne17” bet $125, “santinhoz” raised to $499.67, and this time “Orianne17” made the call. The pot now stood at $1,379.34.
Following the Turn of [card Kc], “santinhoz” – who was still sitting on a set of Jacks – became the aggressor, betting $915.89. “Orianne17” – whose hand had now improved to a 9-K straight – called the bet, increasing the pot size to $3,211.12.
The River card [card Jc)] gave “santinhoz” Quad Jacks, and he moved all-in for $5,549.26. However, “Orianne17” had further improved his hand to a Straight Flush, and although he was unable to match the bet, called with what he had – increasing the pot to $8,478.78.
When the two players´ hole cards were revealed, tickertape started falling from the top of the screen and a message flashed up on screen announcing that the Bad Beat Jackpot had been won in the Straight Flush over Quad Jacks hand. The payouts for players dealt into the hand were also announced:

- “Orianne17” $87,109.39
- “iceman2709” $23,229.17
- “BELISSIMO” $23,229.17
- “Feruell” $23.229.17
Because the Bad Beat Jackpot is also shared among every other active player competing on BetOnline Poker´s Jackpot tables, a further 87 players each received $801.01 just for being in the right place at the right time. However, spare a thought for a player with the username “passamassa” who was sitting out at the table when the jackpot was won. Under the rules of the promotion, he received nothing.
Was the Double Win Too Good to be True?
Naturally, the same player winning the Bad Beat Jackpot twice within six weeks raised a few eyebrows among cynical members of the online poker community. My own personal feeling was that a player has got in twice within six weeks with the best post-flop hand and been beaten. That can happen to any player twice in the same session! It´s happened to me plenty of times!
Nonetheless there were a few sarcastic comments posted on the 2+2 poker forum and across Twitter:

One further point to note is that “santinhoz” won the second Bad Beat Jackpot playing at stakes of $10/$20, whereas his initial jackpot win had been in a $1/$2 cash game. I probably would have been a little surprised if he was still playing at the $1/$2 level after his bankroll increased by $218,000, and I say good luck to him. Now, can lightning strike for a third time?
