Hue Jackson Hired By Bengals
Former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson has been hired by the Cincinnati Bengals. Jackson has been named special assistant to the head coach, and this is Jackson’s third stint with the Bengals. Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis and Jackson are close friends, and Jackson will work closely with the defense in his time in Cincinnati. The Cleveland Browns fired Jackson on October 29 after he posted a 3-36-1 record in his three seasons with the team. Jackson’s last stint in Cincinnati was from 2014-15 when he was the offensive coordinator for the Bengals. The Bengals did not announce the length or terms of the contract that Jackson signed.
Bengals Fire Defensive Coordinator
In related news, the Cincinnati Bengals fired defensive coordinator Teryl Austin on Monday that could open the door for more responsibility for Jackson. Austin came to the Bengals after serving as the Detroit Lions coordinator from 2014-17, but his stint in Cincinnati lasted just nine games this season. The Bengals became the first team in the Super-Bowl era to give up over 500 yards in three straight games. Cincinnati fell to just 5-4 on the season after giving up 51 points to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
Cooper Kupp Out For Season
The Los Angeles Rams will be without wide receiver Cooper Kupp for the remainder of the season. An MRI confirmed that Kupp tore his ACL in a win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, and surgery is expected to repair the torn ligament. The injury occurred when Kupp was trying to plant and make a cut in the second half of the game against Seattle. Kupp has caught 40 passes for 566 yards and six touchdowns this season, his second in the NFL.
Buccaneers Trying Another Kicker
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will turn to another new kicker as they continue to search from some consistency in the kicking game this season. Tampa Bay announced on Monday that they have waived kicker Chandler Catanzaro after he missed two field goals in a loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday. The Buccaneers signed Catanzaro to a three-year deal worth over $9.5 million this offseason, but the Clemson product lasted just nine games. Tampa Bay is planning to sign Cairo Santos, according to an NFL source. Cantos spent a portion of the season with the Los Angeles Rams this season, making five of six field goal attempts and five of six extra points.
Saints Signing Brandon Marshall
The New Orleans Saints have announced that they are signing wide receiver Brandon Marshall. The news comes just days after the Saints signed Dez Bryant, only to see Bryant go down with a torn Achilles heel last week. Marshall began the season with the Seattle Seahawks but was released in October after struggling with production. The 13-year veteran will be joining his 7th team this week. Marshall made 11 catches for 136 yards and a touchdown with the Saints before his release. The 34-year-old has hauled in 970 passes for 12,351 yards and 83 touchdowns during his All-Pro career.
Bills Waive Peterman
The Buffalo Bills have waived quarterback Nathan Peterman, the team announced on Monday. Buffalo selected Peterman in the 5th round of the 2017 NFL Draft, but he struggled mightily when he was inserted into the lineup. Peterman appeared in eight games during his two seasons with the Buffalo Bills and made four starts for the team. He has thrown for just three touchdowns to a whopping 12 interceptions in his 130 career passing attempts. The 24-year-old made his first NFL start on November 19 of last year in a game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Peterman threw five first-half interceptions, becoming the first quarterback since the AFL-NFL merger to throw that many picks in the first half of the game. He began the season as the starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, but he lost his job after playing just one half in the season opener. His final appearance with the Bills came in a blowout loss to the Chicago Bears, a game in which he threw three interceptions.
