The Associated Press Top 25 will look quite a bit different this week after eleven ranked teams suffered a loss during week nine of the college football season. It was the most ranked teams to lose on the same weekend this season. The top five teams in the polls remain the same after week nine, with Alabama remaining at number 1.
Most of the carnage came at the bottom of the rankings, as nine of the eleven teams ranked 15-25 lost over the weekend. Eight ranked teams lost to unranked teams, which is the most ever during the Top 25 era. A pair of power five teams jumped into the rankings after long streaks of being unranked. Syracuse jumped into the 22nd spot in the rankings, and it was the first time they have been ranked since 2001. The Orange had previously had the second longest unranked streak of any power five team, trailing only Indiana. Virginia jumped into the rankings at number 23, which is the first time they have been in the top 25 since the 2011 season.
College Football Playoff Rankings To Be Released
The initial College Football Playoffs rankings are set to be released on Tuesday, October 30. This will be the first of five rankings that will come before the final four teams are announced on December 2. The rankings will be unveiled each Tuesday and will be televised live on ESPN with a time yet to be announced. The semifinals of the College Football Playoffs are set for Saturday December 29. The Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl have been selected as the sites for this year’s semifinal games. The 2019 College Football Playoff Championship Game is set for January 7 at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco, California. Bill Hancock is the Executive Director of the College Football Playoff Committee this season.
Florida State Blown Out By Clemson
The Florida State Seminoles were defeated by Clemson on Saturday by a score of 59-10. The 49 point loss in the worst home loss in the long storied history of the Florida State football program. Florida State coach Willie Taggart told the media after the game that he believed that players quit on the team and the program. The Seminoles won ten games just two seasons ago, but have fallen on hard times in the last two seasons. Clemson has now won four straight games over Florida State for the first time in school history. The 49 point defeat also tied the record for worst loss in school history, matching a 49-0 loss to Florida in 1973. The Seminoles had two players ejected in the game and committed 16 penalties for a whopping 134 yards in the loss.
Iowa Suspends Two Players
The University of Iowa announced that they have suspended backup defensive backs Trey Creamer and Matt Hankins for next week’s game against the Purdue Boilermakers. The suspension comes after both players were cited for disorderly conduct. The citations were issued after noise complaints were made about a house party being thrown by Hankins and Creamer. The two players reserves did not make the trip to Penn State in a game that Iowa lost 30-24 in week nine of the college football season. Iowa is the 19th ranked team in the Associated Press rankings heading into week 10.
University Of Kansas Snaps Long Streak
The Kansas Jayhawks hung on for a 27-26 win over TCU this weekend, and in the process snapped one of the longest and most unique losing streaks in college football history. The win gave the Jayhawks their first victory in the month of October since the 2009 season. Kansas had lost 38 straight games in the month of October, but have broken a few long losing streaks this season. The Jayhawks improved to 3-5 with the victory and snapped their four game losing streak in the process. Jayhawks coach David Beaty picked up just his second Big 12 win in the victory. One reason for the Jayhawks success this season has been their ability to force turnovers. Kansas has the best turnover differential in the Big 12 Conference this season. Kansas will host Iowa State next weekend looking to win a second straight Big 12 game.
